Summary of Our First Missions Trip – Spring 2017

First of all, THANK YOU ALL for making the Thrift2Gift-Garner Store first missions trip possible.  Your continued support will help us help more children globally.

The trip covered the dates of May 15, 2017 – June 2, 2017.  I wish we would have had more time and resources, because there were so many children and families in need of help.  The organizations we supported on this trip were:

Happy Life Childrens’ Home,  Sheep Care Community School,  James 1:27 Strategic Missions, Heart of Mercy Orphanage and Musa Otieno Organization.

We were able to carry a total of 8 large suitcases full of supplies.  The airlines charged us $200 per bag, which affected our ability to buy much needed rice, vegetables, flour, etc., for some of the families.

We were able to collect from our loyal customers and partners,  items such as sanitary napkins, panties, boys underwear, tee-shirts, soap, deodorant, books, pencils, pens, candy, knitted baby caps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, coloring books and crayons.

Our next trip will be in October 2017, only 3.5 months away.  We need serious financial donations to make this trip possible.  Our goal is to help a couple of the school girls, ages 11 and 13; they both have AIDS and need medication, as well as new school uniforms.

We also want to ship books over ahead of time because of the massive weight of the books.  The books will help expand the school’s small library collection. This  will cost money.

PLEASE help us now by giving financially.  Go to http://www.KAECmissions.com  and donate generously. We NEED to focus on the finances first, then in August, we will start collecting supplies.

Thank you all so much for your love, support, encouragment and shopping with Thrift2Gift-Garner store on a weekly basis.  Please spread the word about us.  We really need more customers to shop with us in order to remain open.

Feel free to donate your gently used items, such as…..DVDs, CDs, Books, Household Items, Sheets, Towels, Men Shoes, Men pants, small size furniture items, and picture frames.

Stop by and see us soon. Remember to check our FaceBook page each week and find out the Word of the Week; use the Word of the Week to receive your discount when you shop.

The Thrift Life Chose Us…

Earlier this past week my son wrote on a white board …”The Thrift Life Chose us, we did not Choose It”. I instantly fell in love with that sentence. Thrifting really did choose us. It literally changed our lives. I have spent the past 49 years spending no less than $80 on a blouse; not to mention bottoms, dresses and shoes. An average outfit cost me $200 plus. Why? I was addicted to name brand clothing and the idea of making others rich, while I go deeper into debt.

I don’t exactly remember when thrifting became my friend. She slowly and quietly came upon me over a period of two years.

As a mixed media artist, I would go to thrift stores to buy “treasure” for my abstract art addiction. I would never go near the clothing. But one night in the year of 2014, I dreamed about operating a thrift store. Since I was busy in ministry and traveling as a missionary, I ignored the dream. But the dream did not ignore me.

The needs at the school we support in Kenya were increasing and money was decreasing. And the thrift store was upon my heart again. So I started visiting thrift stores with a different perspective.  The grace of God gave me the desire to look beyond my art focus and see the stores. It was like a light came on in my brain and I saw everything as amazing treasure.

I wanted in! I talked to many thrifters and thrift store owners. I prayed for guidance and the thrift life became a very close friend. It was the answer to the crisis in Kenya and in my local community.

As you already know…..thrifting is a game changer in so many ways.  Thrifters get to buy a $5 North Face jacket, that the previous owner paid $149 or more  for. As thrifters, we pay that $5, then take it to the cleaners for $3.75 and it’s like new. And we ROCK IT! ☺️. You do the math.

Now we have money to travel the world and help others…. yeah!

The Thrift Life introduced me to Do It Yourself (DIY) projects and I love it! Many Thrifters buy furniture, frames, books, toys, jewelry and much more, and literally transform the items.

I did not choose the thrift life, it chose me and I am so glad it did. If you have not tried it, it’s time to go thrifting. Grab a friend and give it a try. If you are in Garner NC area, check us out at 322 McCormick Street. Our store is clean, neat, smells nice and so much fun! The merchandise is awesome and inexpensive. Check out our sister store in Cary, NC.

Until next time….CHOOSE THRIFTING!

Thrifting is Fun and much more…

I can’t believe it’s February of 2017 already. Time is literally flying by us. I am enjoying the journey of Thrifting so much that I want the days to slow down.

Thrifting is fun, but I have realized that it is so much more than fun. It’s a way of life. It’s a mindset. It’s a style. It’s adventure.

Thrifting is so so much more! There are many thrift stores that have opened because of a desire to be a solution to a major problem. For example, our thrift store exist to feed, clothe and educate the beautiful children who attend SHEEPCARE school in Nairobi Kenya, as well as support the organizations that help the homeless right here in our local community.

What does this mean? It means that our awesome customers get to partner with us and make dreams happen for others globally.  All of our profits beyond necessary expenses to operate the store go directly to children and families in need. AMEN!

The pic above is a pic of the staff of SHEEPCARE harvesting maize last week, for the children to eat for next few months. Our customers help make this happen! 👏🏿

Thrifting is about relationships. Our customers have become our family and we hug, laugh, cry, and pray together.

We treasure hunt together; there is so much treasure to find in thrifting. 😎🤗

We sing together (we love to play Motown Oldies), dance together and just love on one another. It’s an amazing atmosphere.

I am learning that people who Thrift on a regular basis know how to manage their money well. By shopping for that $100 North Face jacket or vest at Thrift2Gift vs the mall, they save over 75%. And when steward our blessings well, we get more. “The more you give, the more you receive”.

Our donors bring really nice gently used clothing, household goods, toys, books, etc. And we get lots of new items with tags still attached! Why go pay more when you can pay less and have a blast shopping for it.

If you haven’t visited our store yet and you are near Garner, NC, you must stop by.

Junk = Treasure

Junk always equals Treasure. I am an ever evolving professional thrifter and I am learning that there is no such thing as junk.

All so called junk has a purpose and when the creator of that purpose is introduced to the so called junk, treasure is born.

Thrifting is the heartbeat of living simple. It’s a trend that will never end.

I love to see people buy used, tattered items and use their artistic imagination to create something new.

There are no mistakes, just freedom to create.

Stop by Thrift2Gift-Garner and see what amazing treasure you can find.

“Give Up The Maps”

I read this on a blog once and now it seem so timely for my present journey:

“There is not a right way to pioneer new territory. It is a step-by-step journey, completely dependent on God, who usually only gives you the next step. I still crave a map and a guide, but I am learning to lean into the Spirit and God’s Word when I feel alone and lost–and He has yet to forsake me. But do seek the counsel of those pioneers who have cut through the wilderness before. Their remarkable bravery can inspire the strength you need to take new steps”

The presence of the Lord is showing up in unusual amazing ways at our thrift store.  It’s blowing my mind daily at the love, grace and faithfulness of our Lord. He knows all things.

Who would have ever thought that a dream to simply live out James 1:27 and praying to God for ideas for ongoing provision to help others would lead to a thrift store.

I had to throw the maps away because my religious map mindset prevented me from thinking outside the box.

I just said YES and leaped off the cliff of faith, with my eyes closed tight, hoping Abba would catch me. And He did!

I am having a blast! And the best part I get to walk this journey with my BFF, Stephanie Chosen, a woman of amazing faith.

And we get to come alongside my humbled son, Joshua, and assist him in his Dirty Water Coffee Company journey. Check out his amazing site    http://www.dirtywaternc.com/

Then there is George and Nicholette; WOW God! The most passionate, loving and faith filled business partners one could ever have.

And the very best blessing is the ongoing encounters with amazing men, women and children who shop at Thrift2Gift-Garner; those who donate and the sincere prayer warriors who pray for us.

THANK YOU JESUS! I am so glad I threw away the maps and simply said yes without complicating things.

If you are reading this blog and live in NC, you need to make your way to Thrift2Gift and experience His presence and amazing people.

PS: we love to pray for people in the store.

Living His Dream

A Journey of Trust

I am hours away from opening the doors for the very first time to a vision given by God Himself. The mission of Thrift2GIft-Garner is saving children globally, one child at a time.

My heart leaps with joy knowing that I am touching the heart of God. Knowing that many others are praying, encouraging and sowing into this awesome vision.

This is a Body of Christ and Community effort. What Abba has planned has yet to unfold completely.

Thrift2Gift-Garner, as well as our sister stores in Cary and Apex, have the opportunity to be a bright light in our local communities, help families to afford clothing and other items they need, reach out to individuals in transition from jail, homelessness, etc. The list goes on.

Thrift2Gift will touch Nations like Dominican Republic, Mexico, Kenya Africa, Haiti, Belize and Nations yet to be known.

This is definitely a journey of trust because only Jehovah Jirah Himself can provide what we need to develop this vision long term.

James 1:27 is who I am. The love of Jesus has given me a heart of flesh so that I am moved with compassion when I see others in need. I can’t imagine life any other way.

How do you ignore these beautiful feet created by God and destined for greatness.

We can’t. So we step out in faith and walk out the visions given by God; visions that will show us how to help others and be the salt of the earth.

A journey of trust.

If you are moved at the sight of a problem, then God wants to give you the solution. Pray, seek and you will find. Be a doer and not just a hearer.
