Living The Thrift Life

Thrifting is a lifestyle, not a one time event. It’s life changing, eye opening and mind decluttering.

The definition of thrift sums it up.

Thrift – extreme care in spending money; reluctance to spend money unnecessarily.

We thrift store junkies have our own lingo and we bond like family. It’s hard to explain but it’s so easy to bond with other thrifters. We all want to save money, buy best for less and pay-it- forward in the process.

Shopping  second hand is a more stylish investment of your retail budget!

Some days we just wanna THRIFT TILL YOU DROP!

Other days we just wanna cruise thrift shops and look at all the treasures, and not necessarily buy anything. It’s relaxing to just walk around and meet new thrifters, discuss amazing deals and strategize  DIY projects.

If you haven’t taken the ThriftLife plunge, check out Thrift2Gift-Garner and become acquainted with an amazing staff and atomosphere. And help others when you make a purchase.

Thrift Out!

Imperfection and Thrifting

There is beauty in imperfection. I saw a doll missing her left arm in the thrift store today. I picked her up with the intention of throwing her into the trash. But I notice there was something special about this doll.

Even though her left arm was missing, she was still a beautiful doll. In a world where people will do anything to be perfect, it’s nice to be reminded that IMPERFECTION is just as beautiful.

I use to be an out-of-control perfectionist and I literally developed stomach ulcers as a result. The difficulties of life humbled me and transformed me into the woman I am becoming. The THRIFTLife is teaching me so much about real authentic beauty.

My hair may not be perfect sometimes; my knees hurt often; I need reading glasses now; I have crazy painful headaches; life seems unfair sometimes, and the list goes on and on. BUT….what matters most is that external imperfections produce the most amazing inner beauty.

God created us all with extraordinary beauty inside, and it gives us the ability to see beauty in anything if we simply look beyond the “perfection”.

I love the ThriftLife because I get to encounter treasure & the most amazing people. I see God. I see Him in the people and the many different items that are donated.

“An ordinary life can be extraordinary, there is beauty in IMPERFECTION, and that magic can be found in the everyday”

The Thrift Life Chose Us…

Earlier this past week my son wrote on a white board …”The Thrift Life Chose us, we did not Choose It”. I instantly fell in love with that sentence. Thrifting really did choose us. It literally changed our lives. I have spent the past 49 years spending no less than $80 on a blouse; not to mention bottoms, dresses and shoes. An average outfit cost me $200 plus. Why? I was addicted to name brand clothing and the idea of making others rich, while I go deeper into debt.

I don’t exactly remember when thrifting became my friend. She slowly and quietly came upon me over a period of two years.

As a mixed media artist, I would go to thrift stores to buy “treasure” for my abstract art addiction. I would never go near the clothing. But one night in the year of 2014, I dreamed about operating a thrift store. Since I was busy in ministry and traveling as a missionary, I ignored the dream. But the dream did not ignore me.

The needs at the school we support in Kenya were increasing and money was decreasing. And the thrift store was upon my heart again. So I started visiting thrift stores with a different perspective.  The grace of God gave me the desire to look beyond my art focus and see the stores. It was like a light came on in my brain and I saw everything as amazing treasure.

I wanted in! I talked to many thrifters and thrift store owners. I prayed for guidance and the thrift life became a very close friend. It was the answer to the crisis in Kenya and in my local community.

As you already know…..thrifting is a game changer in so many ways.  Thrifters get to buy a $5 North Face jacket, that the previous owner paid $149 or more  for. As thrifters, we pay that $5, then take it to the cleaners for $3.75 and it’s like new. And we ROCK IT! ☺️. You do the math.

Now we have money to travel the world and help others…. yeah!

The Thrift Life introduced me to Do It Yourself (DIY) projects and I love it! Many Thrifters buy furniture, frames, books, toys, jewelry and much more, and literally transform the items.

I did not choose the thrift life, it chose me and I am so glad it did. If you have not tried it, it’s time to go thrifting. Grab a friend and give it a try. If you are in Garner NC area, check us out at 322 McCormick Street. Our store is clean, neat, smells nice and so much fun! The merchandise is awesome and inexpensive. Check out our sister store in Cary, NC.

Until next time….CHOOSE THRIFTING!

Thrifting is Fun and much more…

I can’t believe it’s February of 2017 already. Time is literally flying by us. I am enjoying the journey of Thrifting so much that I want the days to slow down.

Thrifting is fun, but I have realized that it is so much more than fun. It’s a way of life. It’s a mindset. It’s a style. It’s adventure.

Thrifting is so so much more! There are many thrift stores that have opened because of a desire to be a solution to a major problem. For example, our thrift store exist to feed, clothe and educate the beautiful children who attend SHEEPCARE school in Nairobi Kenya, as well as support the organizations that help the homeless right here in our local community.

What does this mean? It means that our awesome customers get to partner with us and make dreams happen for others globally.  All of our profits beyond necessary expenses to operate the store go directly to children and families in need. AMEN!

The pic above is a pic of the staff of SHEEPCARE harvesting maize last week, for the children to eat for next few months. Our customers help make this happen! 👏🏿

Thrifting is about relationships. Our customers have become our family and we hug, laugh, cry, and pray together.

We treasure hunt together; there is so much treasure to find in thrifting. 😎🤗

We sing together (we love to play Motown Oldies), dance together and just love on one another. It’s an amazing atmosphere.

I am learning that people who Thrift on a regular basis know how to manage their money well. By shopping for that $100 North Face jacket or vest at Thrift2Gift vs the mall, they save over 75%. And when steward our blessings well, we get more. “The more you give, the more you receive”.

Our donors bring really nice gently used clothing, household goods, toys, books, etc. And we get lots of new items with tags still attached! Why go pay more when you can pay less and have a blast shopping for it.

If you haven’t visited our store yet and you are near Garner, NC, you must stop by.
